Most people don’t go looking for a maintenance company until something has already gone wrong.
The gutter that overflowed once too often. The weatherboard that’s started to lift. The rental that needs to be presentable by the twentieth. The list of small jobs that never quite gets short enough to feel finished.
What makes those moments stressful usually isn’t the work itself. It’s the coordination — finding someone who turns up, explaining the property from scratch, chasing a quote that never arrives, then doing it all again for the next job.
Melbourne City Maintenance has been taking that off people’s plates across Melbourne’s inner suburbs since 2005.

We’re a property maintenance company that does a lot of painting — not a painting company that occasionally fixes things. The difference matters, because it changes what you can call us for.
Painting, inside and out. Interior repaints that make a tired room feel finished. Exterior work on weatherboards, render and heritage facades, including the preparation and rot repair that decides whether a paint job lasts three years or ten.

Weatherboard repair and timber work. A large part of what we do, and the reason a lot of period-home owners in the inner north find us in the first place.
Handyman work. Booked as a half day or a full day, working through your list in one visit rather than one trade at a time.
Property maintenance packages. Scheduled quarterly or half-yearly visits for people who’d rather stay ahead of the list than react to it.
The parts nobody enjoys. Council and electrical permits, WorkSafe requirements, traffic management, elevated work platform access, and coordinating other trades when a job needs them. You don’t chase approvals. We do.
Anyone can say they’re experienced. Here’s what it means in practice.
We’ve seen your house before. Not literally — but we’ve worked on a lot of Californian bungalows in Thornbury, a lot of Edwardian weatherboards in Northcote, a lot of 1970s brick in Preston. We know where rot starts on a south-facing wall and which repairs are worth doing now rather than next winter.
We know the difference between a paint problem and a timber problem. On one weatherboard restoration, years of weather had gone past the paint and into the boards themselves. Several were beyond patching and had to come out and be replaced entirely, along with the window architraves and finials, before a brush touched the house. Painting over that would have looked fine for a season and failed by the second winter. The full job, start to finish, is documented with photographs.

We tell you when not to spend money. Some jobs can wait a season. Some can’t. We’ll say which is which, including when the answer costs us the work.
We finish, then we check. Every job comes with a 3-Month Satisfaction Check-In — we come back and make sure it still looks the way it did the day we left.
We’re a good fit for:
We’re honest about where we’re not the right call: if you need one wall painted and nothing else, a smaller operator will do it cheaper. Where we earn our keep is on work that needs planning, access, compliance, or more than one trade.
We’re based in and built around Melbourne’s inner north, and we work across Northcote, Thornbury, Preston, Fairfield, Clifton Hill, Abbotsford, Collingwood, Brunswick, Brunswick East, Fitzroy and Carlton.
We travel further for the right job — worth asking if you’re just outside that ring.
You don’t need to know exactly what you want. Most people start by describing the problem and letting us work out the order things should happen in.

A friend found reviews of this company on a neighbourhood website so I included MCM in my list when I sought quotes for repairing and painting weatherboards on my house. I chose Bill’s company on the basis of a competitive quote but mainly because of his communication which was engaging and informative. Bill and his term worked hard, keeping us in the loop every step of the way. He also helped us find other good tradespeople to fix other problems that came to light. We’re happy with the results but more importantly, we were happy with the whole process of getting the work done.
