Interior Painting in Preston: Turning a Weatherboard Home Into a Standout Sale
When a close friend of mine decided to move overseas permanently, they knew their Preston weatherboard home needed a refresh before hitting the market. The bones were good, but the house felt dark, dated, and cluttered, a mix of styles and unfinished jobs that wouldn’t show well in photos or inspections.
Their goal? A clean, cohesive, light-filled space that buyers could fall in love with and pay top dollar for.
That’s where we came in.
At Melbourne City Maintenance, we specialise in helping homeowners maximise their property’s value with high-quality, stress-free interior painting that makes every surface shine.

The Challenge: Dated Colours, Cracks & No Flow
This wasn’t a quick touch-up job.
- The walls were painted dark green, making the rooms feel small and closed in
- Cracks had formed in the plaster after recent restumping
- Skirting boards showed signs of carpet removal damage
- There were several unfinished jobs and a lack of cohesion throughout the house
What the property needed was a complete visual reset, something that would make buyers feel like they were walking into a fresh start.

So now the house looks nice and clean and is a blank canvas for the new owners who will move in. This room was painted in a dark green, and I wish I had taken a before photo because it looks completely different now. The new color is much brighter and lighter compared to the old one.
The carpets were removed, revealing some minor damage to the skirtings, which we quickly dealt with by repairing them, filling the gaps and nail holes, sanding them smooth, and applying two coats of semi-gloss enamel.
You can see how much brighter and lighter this house is now. The new colour is really good at keeping the place looking very bright and light without making it too dark, like a straight white color.

Our Interior Painting Approach – Start to Sold
We handled everything from surface prep to final detailing:
🧱 Wall Repairs & Prep
We filled restumping cracks with appropriate fillers, sanded them smooth, and applied undercoat for a flawless base.
🎨 Neutral Paint Palette
We used Dulux Natural White across all walls, ceilings, skirting boards, architraves, and doors to brighten the space and unify every room.
🛠️ Trim & Timberwork
Doors, wardrobes, and cabinetry were painted in semi-gloss enamel for durability and clean contrast.
🛁 Bathrooms
We refreshed the painted surfaces in tiled rooms, including windows, ceilings, and doorframes, with a moisture-resistant finish.
🛋️ Careful Protection
Furniture, TVs, curtains, and kitchen benches were all fully protected with drop sheets. The family was able to continue using their dining area during the job.
🧹 Immaculate Clean-Up
We vacuumed, dusted, and removed all protection sheets, leaving the home spotless and ready for staging.
The Result: A Light, Airy Space That Sells Itself
“This house is going to be easy to sell.”
— The Real Estate Agent
The transformation was striking. What once felt dark, cluttered, and hard to imagine living in became a bright, modern, inviting space that made the furniture and finishes pop, instead of clashing with them.
Even the homeowner was stunned. The home looked fresh, open, and ready to hand over.
See the Difference

You can see the clean lines, bright light, and open flow in every room. The new paint gave the property a strong first impression online and in person, which helped it stand out in a competitive market.

Interior Painting Across Preston
The house above is one job, but it is a fair sample of what interior painting in Preston usually involves. A lot of the suburb is post-war brick veneer and weatherboard from the late 1940s through the 1960s, with Edwardian and interwar homes toward the Thornbury end. Two things come up again and again.
Movement cracks. Restumping is common on the older timber homes here, and the plaster tells you about it afterwards — cracks around door openings, along cornice lines and across ceilings. Filling them is the easy part; the reason they opened matters more, because a crack that is still moving will come back through new paint within a year.
Rooms that read dark. Post-war floor plans have smaller windows than a modern build, and a heavy colour on the walls closes them in further. The job above went from dark green to Dulux Natural White for exactly that reason — it lifts a room without the flat glare you get from a straight white.
Interiors in Preston are generally faster and cheaper than the same job three suburbs south, because the plaster is more forgiving than the lath and plaster in the period suburbs. That is worth knowing before you accept a quote built on inner-city assumptions.

A friend found reviews of this company on a neighbourhood website so I included MCM in my list when I sought quotes for repairing and painting weatherboards on my house.
